Nationwide electricity supply is expected to drop by 400 megawatts (MW) as the 650MW capacity Shell Petroleum Development Company’s (SPDC) Afam VI power 400MW will be shut down for about a week.

A statement from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Sunday which confirmed the development stated that there would be a reduction in generation output by 400MW, from today to November 9.
The statement explained that the  scheduled maintenance work on Okoloma gas plant supplying gas to Afam VI Power Plant would result to the shutdown of the power plant and then nationwide power rationing.
The shutdown of Afam VI power plant, TCN said became necessary to allow SPDC inspect and carry out routine maintenance work on the Okoloma natural gas station in Afam, Rivers State, to ensure its technical integrity.
It noted that maintenance work on Okoloma gas plant as revealed by SPDC was important to guarantee continuous and uninterrupted supply of gas to Afam VI for power generation into the national grid.

TCN also expressed its regrets over inconveniences the six-day power rationing would cause the country, it assured that the maintenance work was in line with the present administration's efforts to improve power supply in the country.

The Afam power plant, it was learnt, has increased Nigeria's electricity generating capacity and gas supply by around 14 to 24 per cent.
The plant generates 650MW at peak net dependable capacity during a combined-cycle commercial operation.
